The earliest place  of recreation in the Marissa area was the Oak Ridge Park Association at White Oak, south of the railroad tracks.  This site attracted trainloads of visitors from St. Louis and elsewhere in the 1880’s.  Here by the lake, or strolling across the bridge, or picnicking on the grass, a party of five could have a good time at the cost of only 25 cents, while parties of 50 to 100 paid only $2.00 a day for the use.
